12 Things You May Not Know About Me
by Becky Roesler

1. My art studio is in a room in my home. Art is piled up everywhere around the house, as well as in another storage building on my property. I’ve given up on trying to keep my house clean.

2. I get bored very easily, so I often switch between styles, techniques, and materials I use.

3. I’ve been an artist my whole life and I’ve been showing and selling my art full time since 2002. I still feel very vulnerable every time I show my work to others.

4. I made very realistic still life, florals, and landscapes in pastels and oil paint up until 2013, when I started painting abstracts.

5. I had to stop using pastels and oil paint to create art because I have such severe allergies. Now I only work in acrylic and mixed media.

6. I learned a lot about color, design, and making custom orders in the years I worked as a floral designer.

7. I earned my first art award in second grade for a fire prevention poster I made.

8. I did not like abstract artwork until 5 years ago when I suddenly started seeing it with new eyes. I then realized that I was more interested in how a color or shape reacts to the one next to it than anything else, and that I no longer needed a realistic, recognizable subject to create my art.

9. I am obsessed with color and I consider myself a Colorist. The main subject in all my paintings is always color, and the lines, shapes, and values are there to balance and compliment the color.

10. I love it when people tell me what they see in an abstract painting or how one of my artworks makes them feel. I find it so interesting because it is almost always different than what I was seeing or feeling while creating the piece.

11. The process of making art is as important to me as the finished piece. When I’m in that zone where my mind, eyes and hands work as one, I’m totally free from any other concerns. All that matters is how one color or shape looks when sitting next to another. And I'm always surprised (and a tiny bit sad) to finally reach that wonderful sense of fulfillment that tells me my work is done.

12. Making art makes me so happy! I’ve been painting full-time now for about 16 years, and I’m still thrilled every single day when I walk into my studio and get to do exactly what I love to do the most.

And even though I’ve lived with severe and sometimes debilitating anxiety, depression, and pain much of my life, the art that I make comes from a place of pure joy. Art is truly my happy place! For me, art is life and life is art.
